Jordan
Petra, Wadi Rum & the Dead Sea
Jordan is easily one of our favorite destinations, and we don’t say that lightly. In a single week, you can walk through a 2,000-year-old city carved into red cliffs, sleep under the stars in a desert that looks like another planet, and float in the lowest body of water on Earth. But what stays with our travelers most is the people.
Nowhere else are guests welcomed the way they are in Jordan, where a stranger’s first instinct is to pour you tea and a shared meal is treated as an honor. The history will take your breath away, and the hospitality is what will bring you back.
Itinerary
Day 1Arrive in Amman, a city continuously inhabited for thousands of years. It was known as Rabbath Ammon to the Ammonites and as Philadelphia to the Greeks and Romans, when it was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis. Check in to the hotel and settle in after your flight. Gather in the evening for a welcome dinner and a first taste of Jordanian hospitality.
Spend the morning at Amman’s Roman Theatre, built in the 2nd century CE during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. It is cut directly into the hillside and still hosts performances today. The theatre faces north, a deliberate choice to keep the sun off the audience. In the afternoon, the rest of our group joins us from Egypt, and we set off south together toward Petra, staying under some of the clearest night skies in the region.
DAY 2
A full day inside Petra, capital of the Nabataeans, an Arab trading people who grew wealthy controlling caravan routes between Arabia and the Mediterranean. We enter through the Siq, a three-quarter-mile gorge with walls up to 260 feet high, and step out before the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), carved into the sandstone cliff in the 1st century CE. We continue past the Street of Facades, the rock-cut theatre, and the Royal Tombs, with an optional climb to the Monastery (Ad Deir). That evening, join a Bedouin family for a hands-on cooking experience and share the dinner you help prepare.
DAY 3
Depart Petra for Wadi Rum, a protected desert of sandstone and granite mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its nature and culture. People have lived here for some 12,000 years, leaving behind tens of thousands of petroglyphs on the canyon walls. Explore by 4x4 with local Bedouin drivers, crossing red dunes, rock bridges, and narrow canyons. End the day watching the desert turn from gold to deep red, then overnight at a dome camp.
Day 4
A slow desert morning before we leave Wadi Rum and begin the journey north. Our route follows Wadi Araba, part of the Great Rift Valley running from the Red Sea toward the Dead Sea, a corridor traveled by caravans, armies, and pilgrims for millennia. Watch the landscape change as we descend below sea level toward the Dead Sea.
DAY 5
Float in the Dead Sea, the lowest point on land at more than 1,400 feet below sea level. The water is nearly ten times saltier than the ocean, so sinking is impossible. Its minerals and mud have been prized since antiquity, and the Nabataeans of Petra harvested bitumen from its surface and sold it to Egypt for use in embalming. In the afternoon, return to Amman for a final evening together. The next morning, enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then take a private transfer to the airport for your flight home.
